Priorities

Along with the development of the students' personalities and the broadening of their inner cultural world, foreign language teaching at Doris Tenedi School has the following strategic goals:

  • Formation of solid language skills for healthy, real-time communication;
  • Development of solid language foundation and excellent language knowledge and skills for complete communication;
  • Preparation for attending elite Colleges and Universities, where a language entrance examination is required;
  • Professional accomplishment for the graduates as foreign language specialists.

Foreign language options

We offer three options, regarding foreign language teaching:

Option I
Early foreign language study starts in the infant course and continues in high school in the same language.

This option includes the full bilingual course of Doris Tenedi School. In the sixth grade, the students' level of English equals that to the preparatory class of English language high schools (level B2 - European language standard). Next, the students continue their study of English until the last grade. Their linguistic knowledge equals that to the graduates of English language high schools (level C1). The study of a second language starts in the fifth grade, where by graduation of high school the level of knowledge equals that to the preparatory class of foreign language high schools (level B2).

Option II
Early foreign language study of one language and a second in high school.

This option allows the students to pass their full course of study at Doris Tenedi by learning three languages. In the sixth grade their level of English equals that to the preparatory class of English language high schools (level B2). After the 7-th grade they attend the German preparatory class and pass the full course of German language high schools.
English is studied as a second language, and by graduation the level of English equals that to the graduates of English language high schools (level C1). The study of a third language starts in the fifth grade, where by graduation of high school the level of knowledge equals that to the preparatory class of foreign language high schools (level B1 - B2).

Option II
Foreign language in high school.

This option is for students, non-graduates of Doris Tenedi junior school. After passing the seventh grade they attend the German or English preparatory class and pass the full course of Doris Tenedi high school (level C1). The students start learning a second language in the ninth grade. By graduation of high school the level of knowledge of second foreign language equals that to the preparatory class of foreign language high schools (level B2).
In compliance with the norms of the European Council, the communicative skills of Doris Tenedi High School graduates meet the following criteria: "A student must comprehend a broad range of long and complex texts and understand deeper meanings. He should be able to reproduce facts and arguments from oral and written sources. He should be able to use the foreign language in his social and professional life with efficiency and flexibility."

Evaluation of knowledge

Our school has developed a detailed system for current and periodic evaluation of the language skills of the students. Various testing methods are used based upon the leading experience of Bulgarian and foreign institutions. Strong motivating factor for students and teachers is the fulfilling of the European Language Portfolio (ELP), expressing the aims, stages and achievement of the language preparation of each student. An important element of professional and academic accomplishment of Doris Tenedi pupils are the internationally recognised certificates for levels of language knowledge, received at various stages of education. These certificates allow the students to work or study abroad without having to pass additional language tests.
The specialized education for Pitman, FCE, DaF, TOEFL and SAT included in the regular school hours, eases the acquisition of those certificates, which give the right to students, to continue their education abroad.
